Cyber Harassment

Cyber bullying affects people from any age or walk of life, including children, teens and adults who all feel very distressed and alone when being bullied online.  Cyber bullying can make you feel totally overwhelmed which can result in many feeling embarrassed that they are going through such a devastating time, and not knowing what support is available to them.  Many children feel unable to confide in an adult because they feel ashamed and wonder whether they will be judged, told to ignore it or close their account which they might not want to do.

For many cyber bullying affects their everyday lives and is a constant source of distress and worry.  With mobile technology being so freely available it is an ongoing issue and one that is relentless.  Not only does it go on after school, college or work has finished, but it then carries through into the next day and the cycle continues.  It has been well documented that cyber bullying has resulted in tragic events including suicide, and self-harm and clearly, more needs to be done in order to protect vulnerable children and adults from online bullying.

We know that cyber bullying can have devastating impacts on some children and young adults, especially when they feel there is no let up from the abuse.  So what help is available if you feel your child might be in danger of self harming or having suicidal thoughts?

Keep the school involved and put things in writing so you have a formal record of what has been going on.  Ask the school if there is any pastoral support your child can access.

If your child has started to self-harm talk to your GP and a professional organisation who will be able to give you some much needed support such as Harmless or The National Self Harm Network Forum.

Remember that you are important too so it’s crucial that you are taking good care of yourself.  The more relaxed you are feeling the better able you will be to support your child.

If you are worried that your child is having suicidal thoughts seek some medical advice from your GP. Young Mindsis a national charity committed to improving the emotional and mental wellbeing of all children and young adults under the age of 25. They have a parents’ helpline where you can talk your situation through with a trained adviser.

But it’s not just children, Family Lives understands that cyber bullying affects adults too. We know that cyber bullying can also have a devastating impact on adults and can make you feel extremely isolated.  It is very easy to post malicious and hurtful posts on social media sites as there is very little moderation and posts can go “live” before they can be reported.  This can leave people feeling very vulnerable and at a loss as to what they can do.

December Avenue- Sa Ngalan Ng Pag-ibig

During our MYXclusive interview, vocalist and songwriter Zel Bautista explained how he wrote the song back in January after their first major concert at Teatrino.

“Actually based s’ya sa mga songs nasulat na songs before like nung ‘Dahan’ na about moving on. Pero at the end of the day, parang ‘pag ikaw gustong mag move-on parang ayaw mo pa rin, e.”, he said.

The band is also currently recording new songs and is planning to release an all-Filipino record soon and of course, “Sa Ngalan Ng Pag-Ibig” is expected to be part of it. In fact, they played two unreleased songs from the launch called “Kahit Di Mo Alam” and “Bulong” for all of their fans.

“Sa Ngalan Ng Pag-Ibig” made it to various music streaming platforms’ top playlists days after its release.

The music video of “Sa Ngalan Ng Pag-Ibig” stars Bobby Padilla of Hilera, Carissa Ramos of Mr. Bones & the Boneyard Circus, and actress Rich Asuncion. When asked about the music video concept and all of the creative aspects in making it, December Avenue said that all they relied to the hardworking people behind it such as their manager Koi Busalla, and director Alvin Chan.

“Tungkol s’ya sa fantasy, actually. Yung focus ng video is about yung girl, nagkagusto s’ya sa lalaki then nagkaroon s’ya ng fantasy.”, Zel further said.

Sa Ngalan Ng Pag-ibig lyrics

[Verse 1]
Hanggang kailan ako maghihintay na para bang wala ng papalit sayo?
Nasa’n ka man

Nasa’n ka man

[Chorus]
Hanggang sa dulo ng ating walang hanggan
Hanggang ang puso’y wala ng nararamdaman
Kahit matapos ang magpakailan pa man
Ako’y maghihintay sa ngalan ng pag-ibig

[Bridge]
Hanggang kailan pa ba magtitiis?
Nalunod na sa kaiisip
Huling kapiling ka’y sa aking panaginip
Ikaw mula noon
Ikaw hanggang ngayon

Hanggang sa dulo ng ating walang hanggan
Hanggang ang puso’y wala ng maramdaman

[Chorus]
Hanggang sa dulo ng ating walang hanggan
Hanggang ang puso’y wala nang nararamdaman
Kahit matapos ang magpakailan pa man
Ako’y maghihintay sa ngalan ng pag-ibig

Hanggang sa dulo ng ating walang hanggan
Hanggang ang puso’y wala nang nararamdaman
Kahit matapos ang magpakailan pa man
Ako’y maghihintay sa ngalan ng pag-ibig mo

SAME SEX MARRIAGE

1.0 Introduction

Gay marriage is one of the most controversial issues in the modern world. For the past thousand years, marriage has been recognized as the social union between a man and a woman. In most cultures across the globe, homosexuality was viewed with disdain, and marriages between same-sex couples were forbidden.

However, homosexual relationships are slowly gaining acceptance, as homosexuals have become vocal in fighting their right to marry in the early 90s. With an increased in tolerance for homosexuality in the society, the controversy over the legalization of gay marriage has been disputed among people in many nations. While the majority of the population believes that the legalization of gay marriage will have negative impact on the society, gay activists claim that it is against basic civil rights to prohibit them from marrying.

This report will first review the history of battle to legalizing gay marriage, and the current status in today’s world. It will then examine the reasons for and against the legalization of gay marriage. The conclusion will summarize the main arguments

2.0 Overview of gay marriage

2.1 History

Same-sex marriage is nothing new, with historical evidence showing that marriage has not always been the institution between heterosexuals. Gay marriages have existed in some form around 600 years ago. (Tulchin, 2007) Since early 1960’s, gay activists have been striving for the right to marry. However, the issue of gay marriage only arose from the 1990’s, as three same-sex couples filed a lawsuit against the state of Hawaii for the prohibition of gay marriage in US. The case has come to a conclusion that banning gay marriage is not constitutional, as there is no real practical reason and compelling arguments for it. (Bower, 2010)

This event had triggered the world’s attention over the next decade and consequently led to the creation and approval of the Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA) in 1998. This law is exercised in the US and it has further defined the term marriage, solely as the legal union between a man and a woman. (Bower, 2010) In addition, this law asserts that no states in the US are required to recognize same-sex marriage that is performed in other places. (Masci, 2007)

Although gay marriage is not allowed in many countries, some places provide an alternative – civil union, as a compromise. In order to reduce controversy, the term civil union was used in replace of marriage, and it is an institution that offers same-sex couples all the rights, benefits and privileges that are equivalent to marriage. (Kirk, 2010)

In 1989, Denmark was the first country to establish civil union laws. Since then, many other countries, including Australia and some states in the US, have adopted the civil union law in attempt to resolve the problem of gay marriage. (Ellis-Christensen, 2010)

Despite the establishment of civil union, advocates of gay marriage have never stopped battling for the right to marry. They indict that civil union do not include all the legal benefits, or the cultural significance of marriage. (Infoplease, 2007) For instance, all benefits and rights granted to a civil partnership are restricted within the state, as DOMA has denied the recognition from the federal government. Also, supporters of gay marriage argue that civil union cannot replace marriage, and it is just an alternative way of segregating gay couples from the society. (Kirk, 2010) This debate on the legalization of marriage will continue in the next few decades.
